This was originally a Japanese horror film. I prefer this version. It stars Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson (who is gorgeous). A reporter's niece dies under mysterious circumstances and her sister (the girl's mom) asks her to investigate. The niece's friends (all teenagers) talk about a secret video that kills whoever watches it exactly seven days later. She learns that her niece and three friends (all dead now) went to a cabin seven days before her death and at that cabin they watched the video. So she goes to the cabin, finds the video, and watches it. The phone rings and an eery voice tells her "seven days". Things get worse when her son inadvertently watches the film too as does her ex-boyfriend (her son's father). So now three of them are trying to find the secret before they die. Digging leads the reporter back to an adopted girl named Samara who had the ability to imprint images on paper, film, video, and on people's brains, so her adoptive parents locked her in the barn where she lived all alone with nothing but a TV to keep her company. Rings 2 follows this one and is even better.
