If you saw "The Birdcage," then you saw the American remake of the French-Italian film "La Cage Aux Folles." The remake is amusing and well-acted, but the original is fizzier, Frenchier, and more daring, considering it came out in the 70s when gay culture was still at the margins. The remake is almost too faithful to the original, which still retains much of its buoyancy and humor. Spawned a sequel and a musical. Music by the great Ennio Morricone.
