Annie Lamott's Imperfect Birds moved slowly for me as it told the story of a Bay Area family dealing with their teenage daughter's experimentation and addiction to all kinds of drugs and alcohol. I did enjoy the descriptions of barely working trust fund Bay Areans, but can see that some may find them to stereotypical to be comical. The point of view shifts were sometimes pointless, and the mom's portions were almost unreadable. It was disturbing how much the mother desperately wanted to be liked by her daughter, and was willing to sacrifice good sense and rationalize her daughter's clear addiction and behavioral issues as her own pysch issues. In fact almost none of the characters ran true for me. Not very much happens in the way of plot, and all this culminates, when the story just sort of ended. Dealing with the subject matter Lamott was working with, the story lacked the necessary power warranted. Unless you are a Lamott fan, you may want to skip this novel.
