This sequel to the Breadwinner is immensely powerful and sad. Scholastic Magazine says that it is aimed at grades 6 to 8. I strongly hope that it is read with the support of a parent or teacher. The book starts with the death of Parvana's father as they look for the rest of the family. Parvana, dressed as a boy so that she can wander relatively freely in Taliban controlled Afghanistan rescues a baby after his family was killed and joins up with a boy who has lost part of his leg and later a young girl who has survived with her almost comatose grandmother. They survive many harrowing situations. Though this is a work of fiction, it is based on real situations. There is a hopeful ending to the second book in this series as she meets up with her mother.
