Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland - Robert Louis Stevenson (born November 13, 1850) was a gifted novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson now ranks as the 26th most translated author in the world. First published in 1886 - The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll tells a dark tale of a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old, kindly friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the decidedly evil Edward Hyde. This influential novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language, with the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next. (*Note*) - On December 3, 1894 - Robert Louis Stevenson (44 at the time) died suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage.
