Summary

When David Rain moves in as a tenant in Elizabeth Pennykettle in Scrubbley, and her 11-year-old daughter, Lucy, he soon learns the house's theme: dragons. Lucy is always on about them--but she acts like they're real...? Lucy's second-favorite chatting topic is squirrels, and David finds himself helping her rescue a particular little friend which Lucy names "Conker" and getting himself an animal rescue girlfriend named Sophie, whom they take injured Conker to eventually, along with his healthy, smiling squirrel friend, Snigger. David also finds himself writing a story about the two squirrels, with the help of a clay dragon (a welcome present from Liz) named Gadzooks for Lucy's eleventh birthday, eventually titling it "Snigger" after the main squirrel. But back to the dragons. The Pennykettle house is FILLED with them, and David eventually learns all their names--and more. Not to mention their tabby cat, Bonnington, who usually takes to snuggling up under the tenant's bedsheets, or in his sweaters. All together, it's a crazy household, but David manages to fit in all right, by doing something he never thought he would do: believe in dragons.
