This 3rd book in the series finally presents a clearer explanation of the Library's role in Cogman's universe of alternate realities, as well as having more action and use of magic than its predecessors. I did find the brief moment of romantic tension between Irene and Vale contrived, particularly since Vale's role in this novel is pretty minor compared to other secondary characters. Cogman does a decent job of an open-ended finish that doesn't have "to be continued" written all over it, but the secret that seemed obvious in the first book still hasn't been revealed. I'm looking forward to reading how a 4th book will top near-destruction of the Library.
