I've enjoyed Cusk's fiction books such as Transit with her unusual "stream-of consciousness" writing style where simple daily life is examined so deeply. Unfortunately THE LAST SUPPER doesn't live up to her fiction works. I agree with many of the negative comments others have expressed in these comment pages. The author attempts to examine Italian life, but comes across rather elitist by saying she is neither a tourist nor Italian citizen. Even though she is in Italy for almost 3 months, she is still a tourist - however critically negative she is of other tourists. She travels with her husband & children, but so little is expressed about her family - who are almost like ghosts. And she fails at being an actual knowledgeable art critic. The ending also falls flat! I had high hopes for this supposed travel memoir, as I too have spent time traveling in Italy & France.
