Took the bait and watched this on Netflix before it was removed. Watched this in the cinema back in March 2010 when it was playing. After re-watching this again, it's almost felt like a new movie, but its way too convoluted and disturbing and was surprised to find myself watching this again and getting hooked into the story. Ben Kingsley's portrayal of Dr. John Cawley was totally spell-binding. The theme of the movie is very interesting. After all, you just never know what your government is doing behind closed doors.

This one felt like a waste of time to me. I wasn't impressed.

Movie was great, but for many confusing....so, I recommend reading the book first, and then watching the movie. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane and you are not going to miss a thing!

Just read all the other comments left here, and they seem to run from absolutely dreadful to fantastic! Actually, this is not my usual kind of movie, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would ... and the ending DID surprise me! I didn't see it coming at all - maybe because I'm not used to watching suspense. Anyway, it's got it's faults but definitely worth watching.

Shutter Island is a psychological thriller about a U.S Marshall and his partner’s search for an escaped murderess at a remote island turned asylum for the criminally insane. As the search goes on strange things happen and the two Marshalls begin to unravel a conspiracy, or so it may seem. This movie is excellent but very, very confusing if you don’t pay attention. It’s also an extremely long movie so if you decide to watch it you have to reserve a big chunk of time. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this movie so naturally it’s brilliantly acted and a great, albeit confusing, movie to watch. It combines horror, psychological, and action all in one and the scenery is gorgeous. Everything about this movie from the plot to the way it is shot makes it well worth the watch and a movie that I have personally watched repeatedly as often as possible. Rating 5/5. - @scarletsoldier of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Awful and most foul.

Nothing like the brilliant films in this dark genre.

Zero imagination, zero credibility and not even remotely in the league of "Seven", "Silence of the Lambs", "The Shining" et al.

Should have been titled "Shudder Island". Hollywood at its most soul-less.

Mystery and mayhem at the madhouse may not be the most original plot device in movie history but Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel proves to be an irresistible blend of policier, psychological riddle, and gothic chiller. Here he delivers the goods with full force, foregoing subtlety in favour of thundering winds and hallucinatory side trips awash in blood and ashes. Brilliantly filmed, the imposing Ashecliffe Asylum becomes an organic space alive with ominous shadows and half heard whispers where a struck match flares like a doomsday torch and a desperate stopover in a rain-soaked mausoleum provides some delirious Hollywood overkill. Thankfully, a strong supporting cast (Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow) keeps things creepy yet grounded as they lead us down one blind alley after another. If Scorsese occasionally eclipses the credibility gap, he does it with such gusto that we are more than happy to take the leap with him.

A psychological thriller by Scorsese about a traumatized man having lost his mind. The script is fairly confusing - you don't quite know which is reality and which is illusion in the mind of the insane. But the atmosphere and setting were both well-done. Acting was good. Worth a watch for sure.
