One of David Mamet's best scripts and John Frankenheimer's best movies demonstrating the latter's love of cars and what they can do! (see Grand Prix for reference) -- DeNiro and Jean Reno forge a Franco-American friendship that is touching and loving (remember: we would not have our nation w/o the help of the French!) and Natascha McelHone is Irish to the core, Jonathon Pryce is evil incarnate. And the scenes of les baux de Provence are stunning. An extremely sophisticated thriller even culturally deprived PNW denizens may appreciate for the elegance of writing and evocation of France.

The star power of the actors made the story better than it should, and good thing that they did not pick the alternate ending (see deleted scenes.) As many had commented, the other stars were the locations and the two white knuckle car chases. Last, if the skater looked familiar, she was portrayed by the real Olympian Katarina Witt.

First of two car chases: Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco.
Second of two car chases: Les Invalides, along avenue Duquesne, avenue de Ségur and avenue de Breteuil; through the Champerret Tunnel, toward the great modernistic arch at La Defense, driving the wrong way against 300 stunt drivers along the Périphérique, ring road.

the movie definitely has a euro feel to it (filmed on location). not much suspense. I feel there should be more suspense in this genre of film. as it was, the joy, such as it was, was in watching the excellent acting of the stars: de niro, mcelhone, skarsgaard, reno. the overall feel is somewhat anticlimactic, unfortunately, as, if I am not mistaken, this was director Frankenheimer's swan song. He did much better films earlier in his career, and was in fact JFK's favorite director.

The ultimate action movie! It is also surprisingly realistic! If you like car chases, intrigue, and action you will love this one!

Favourite line of diaologue:

"No questions. No answers. That's the business we're in. You just accept it and move on. Maybe that's lesson number three."

Didn't age too well. Not enough Mamet.
