I thought the narration by 6 yr old, Zach, was somewhat tedious. I found myself skipping over large swaths of parts of his musings. The mother's actions were way over the top when she went after the family of the shooter as she did. And the somewhat happy ending--I didn't believe it. Sorry to be so negative!

Child narrators can be hit or miss for me, but I was charmed and moved by six-year-old Zach Taylor's narration in this novel. The book opens with Zach in lockdown in a closet at his school during a school shooting. Zach's innocence makes for an ideal window to explore the repercussions of this tragedy on his family, his school, and his community.

This book was outstanding. The writer wrote with great sensitivity and I truly felt the emotions of all the characters. I cried many times reading the story thru the eyes of this first grader. I highly recommend this first novel and look forward to her next book.

A compelling and touching story of how a family deals with death. Zach brings his character and that of his family to life through his dialogue. I personally didn't see the need for Dad to have had an affair. It didn't fit in with the overall plot. I would definitely recommend it; however, I don't know if its audience would be especially male-oriented.

I would have rated it higher, but for the happy ending. I didn't believe it.

A school shooting told through the eyes of a loving, forgiving child. The author writes with sensitivity and understanding. The ripple effect through families, communities and generations is inconceivable.
May school shootings be a tragic part of history, never to be heard of again.

Excellent book. Tells a story that has occurred too many times in our country - the results of a school shooting. Told by the surviving brother in a family about how they deal with this horrible situation. Loved the understanding and sympathy that was shown by this young person for the parents of the shooter, who were known by everyone in the school. So sad for everyone. This little boy had a wisdom beyond his years. We should always remember those who were left no matter what their age. Just a beautiful story.

Part of a new genre of books written about the school shooting epidemic. Written from the perspective of a child who survives the harrowing ordeal and strives to understand the impact on his family and community.
