Blue Jasmine featured Britisher Cate Blanchett bestowed with the Best Actress Academy Award as a fragile woman gradually decompensating as she tries to start over. Here again Britisher Kate Winslet is a desperate, frustrated woman with broken dreams in a loveless marriage, having an affair with a much younger lifeguard.

The film opens passing a sign CONEY ISLAND BARREL OF LAFFS, and we move to a drab apartment overlooking a vibrantly painted Coney Island in the 1950's, with the massive Wonder Wheel slowly rotating right outside the window. Funtime organ music and sounds from games of chance filter into the oppressive hothouse atmosphere within. Her husband is a middle-aged carousel ride operator and grade-school son is a fire-starter. She and Jim Belushi give intensely convincing performances. Juno Temple is not asked to do quite as much but makes the most of what she's given, continues to impress - check out Killer Joe - and she's adorably sexy to boot. Justin Timberlake as the lifeguard lacked the chops to keep up and was the only cast weakness for me. He seemed a curious choice for Woody to make.

Would have liked a bonus feature about how Coney island was presented in the film. Overall though a very engaging and doubtlessly well-acted film, despite several clueless comments below. It was said that Winslet was not nominated for an Oscar only due to MeToo politics around Woody at that time.

I saw this film in theatres last winter, and greatly enjoyed it. The movie played out like an old Greek tragedy, and left me with a thrilling chill. Highly recommended.

Wonderful film and great performances especially by Kate Winslet. The story is very sad and depressing but this is a fact of life for many people. That's reality.

I am not a fan of Woody Allen and I was surprised by how much I liked this film. The story is heartbreaking on many levels and the ensemble cast give solid performances. It's worth taking a chance and watching it.

Not worth watching. Got bored at the beginning already.

AVERAGE 2017 film - there ARE some fine qualities to it, but I've been thinking that because I couldn't relate to ANY of the main characters, that kept me from getting emotionally 'engaged' in the happenings - just watching from afar...

Not one single redeeming character in this movie. Awful waste of time watching everyone disintegrate.

It was staged as if it were a play.

Couldn't find anything redeeming about this film.

Slow to watch and no payoff.
