Based on a true story but with plenty of liberties with the truth this pseudo-docudrama is quite entertaining. Tom gets to play a character that is not like himself for a change. If this story is even half true it’s pretty insane.

they probably played fast and loose with the real story, but it was an entertaining movie

Glad to see that Cruise played the part as a handsome charismatic top-gun character instead of a balding and obese man as the real drug smuggler, in 1980s America, land of opportunities. And playing his wife, Sarah Wright must be the prettiest KFC employee of all time, may be in the entire fast food industry. An entertaining bioptic film though clearly highly fictionalized and romanticized story about a pilot in the drug smuggling trade and Iran-Contra affair during the Carter and Reagan administrations. Like Johnny Depp's 2001 "Blow," Cruise portrayed a saintly family man raking in tons of reward money as one of the clogs in the Medellin cartel supply chain. However, unlike Depp's film 2001 "Blow" (about the largest US cocaine dealer in 1970s,) this film never showed one iota of human cost and social destruction brought on by those scumbags, enablers of the drug trade, not even in the bonus feature "The real Barry Seal." Here is a nice fact check link:

Last, if you love this film, think Depp's "Blow" is also down your alley.

Terrifically entertaining in addition to being a razor sharp condemnation of the CIA and the outrageous misdeeds of the Regan years.

I really liked this fast-paced drama with some interesting American history woven in; Tom Cruise was perfect in the role of a high energy commercial pilot who begins an unusual "career" on the side.

Say what you will about him personally, but Tom Cruise movies are generally pretty good these days and this was no exception. Crazy story (the "truth is stranger than fiction" kind), well-told and well-performed. Suspenseful but not really violent. Keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat until it's over. Great, great movie and well worth your time.
