"Come on, rain!" Tess pleads to the sky as listless vines and parched plants droop in the endless heat. Up and down the block, cats pant while heat wavers off tar patches in the broiling alleyway. More than anything, Tess hopes for rain. And when it comes, she and her friends are ready for a surprising joyous celebration....

Through exquisite language and acute observation, Newbery medalist Karen Hesse recreates the glorious experience of a quenching rainstorm on a sweltering summer day. Jon J Muth's masterful and lyrical watercolors perfectly reflect the spirit of the text.

The simple story told through long, descriptive sentences did not keep my three-year-old interested like my five-year-old was. The pictures were lovely and captured African-American, Asian, and caucasian mothers and daughters in the olden days (when phonographs and line-drying were commonplace). It was moving and caught a moment in time that our kids aren't exposed to much.

Really beautiful lyrical book that captures the feeling of a hot summer's day and summer thunderstorms. Lovely mother-daughter bonding, except that all the mothers and daughter pairs look almost exactly alike, which is not very realistic and makes it hard to consider as a book for a mixed race child.
