From the dean of Scandinavian noir, the second riveting installment in the internationally bestselling and universally acclaimed Kurt Wallander series, the basis for the PBS series staring Kenneth Branagh.

On the Swedish coastline, two bodies, victims of grisly torture and cold execution, are discovered in a life raft. With no witnesses, no motives, and no crime scene, Detective Kurt Wallander is frustrated and uncertain he has the ability to solve a case as mysterious as it is heinous. But after the victims are traced to the Baltic state of Latvia, a country gripped by the upheaval of Soviet disintegration, Major Liepa of the Riga police takes over the investigation. Thinking his work done, Wallander slips into routine once more, until suddenly, he is called to Riga and plunged into an alien world where shadows are everywhere, everything is watched, and old regimes will do anything to stay alive.

Mankell depicts a very realistic picture of a totalitarian state where spying, denunciation, corruption and crime are everyday happenings and not just fictional facts to make a good detective story.
Suspenseful, intense and thorough , this story takes the reader on the other side of the iron curtain , not an obsolete metaphor in this novel !
We see a very human side of Inspector Wallander, the main protagonist , who empathizes with the victims, risks his life to help and even make some mistakes along the way .

Swedish mystery about a detective who is asked to uncover the mystery of 3 bodies discovered on a boat . The novel leads to a little international intrigue; of the fight for the rights of the people of Latvia in the Baltic. Easy to read; part of a series of which I am currently reading. It brings a unique perspective of the lives of other peoples. Good.

Love the Mankell books for their plots and the fact that they take place in the context of a world which affects the detective and his progress

This story is more political than a normal police investigation. I don’t know if I like that or not. All in all we have an unofficial police story, a wannabe love story to keep it spicy (of sort), a whodunit between two (maybe) corrupted officials. The conclusion is a tad forced as both corrupted (?) officials spring into action and it all ends as a deflating balloon .I understand the author’s point of view, but political reality does not make for a very good police story. In this case, we have a very good author making due with a somewhat bad story. Life is not a novel and a novel is just that, a novel. Not a documentary. Political events tend to peter out quite quickly and become irrelevant to most people. I don’t even know where the Balcan are, exactly. So any political activity there tends to not register very long.

Too much talking - maybe the way it's translated.

Two bodies are found in a raft on the Swedish coast, and Wallender investigates. The two men are Latvian, so the Swedish police hope the case will go back to Latvia. When a Latvian policeman comes to Sweden and is murdered when he returns home, Wallender is asked to help in a country which in in the midst of Soviet upheaval. Enjoyable read, and I held my breath as Wallender tried to find a hidden file.

Wallander is a very different kind of detective.
