1962. This is a typical movie for John Wayne fans for its era in time. Just rough & tumble chain smoking (all main cast) and constant alcohol consumption w. comedic drunkenness at times every eve after running after wild African animals for zoos. Pretty sexist too and women are causing confusion in the males on who likes whom. Wayne is THE BOSS of 'em all.... the HEAD Bwana ! Some lame comedic sequences for laughter and wild animals for suspense and danger. Nnt to mention the baby elephants.

A family PG movie for today but rather lame, weak story plot. Most of us today in 2019 would say the capture & containment of the animals is savage and cruel.

I'm not sure I would describe this as "fun family entertainment," per the reviewer below, unless you find animals being captured to be sold to zoos fun. Nor is the chain smoking (See below.) the most disturbing sequence. "Hatari!" means "danger" in Swahili, although I thought it meant "animal cruelty." This 1962 movie, while featuring some great location photography (In present day Tanzania.), it's hard to watch for the way the animals are treated, as all the captures of exotic animals (Rhinos, monkeys, elephants) is real and presumably not monitored by any humane organization. If you can get over that, I guess it's an okay movie by Howard Hawks starring John Wayne as John Wayne. I have no idea why it's nearly 3 hours long; there's not much of a plot, there are plenty of long sequences of the characters just drinking, smoking, and talking (A Hawks specialty.), and the humor is lame. There are Africans, but they're mostly in the background. It does have a multi-racial (Mexican, Native American, German, Italian, French) cast, which is kinda progressive, and the two actresses break up the masculine atmosphere with aplomb and verve. The elephants give the best performances. Score by Henry Mancini, which includes the now famous "Baby Elephant Walk." Hawks and Wayne also worked together on "Red River," "Rio Bravo," "El Dorado," and "Rio Lobo."

Fun family entertainment, with a really good enjoyable musical score. Great scenery in Africa.

Africa, animals and adventure, with a little light romance thrown in. You will recognize most of the actors if you like old movies, I really enjoy John Wayne and Red Buttons but the whole cast is great together. It was a different world when this movie was filmed but it has lots of humor, great music and beautiful scenery.
