In 1869, Civil War veteran and amputee Major John Wesley Powell led an expedition down the uncharted Colorado River through the then-nameless Grand Canyon. This is the story of what started as a geological survey, but ended in danger, chaos, and blood. The men were inexperienced and ill-equipped, and they faced unimaginable peril. Along the way there was death, mutiny, and abject terror, but Powell persevered and produced a masterwork of adventure writing still held in the highest regard by the boatmen who follow his course today.

“River Master: John Wesley Powell's Legendary Exploration of the Colorado River and Grand Canyon” details the 1869 exploration expedition of the untamed, uncharted, and dangerous Colorado River. There has been much written about Major Powell’s expedition, but in “River Master”, author Cecil Kuhne weaves together information from multiple sources, including diaries of several expedition members, in a way that becomes a dramatic and definitive accounting of what happened on this amazing journey, day to day, nearly 150 years after the fact. It seems obvious that there were many more reasons this mission should have ended in abject failure, than there were reasons for it to have succeeded. For example, none of the ten men on the expedition were experienced boatsmen. And the boats were of the type that worked well on a lake, but exactly wrong for running the wild, boulder-filled rapids of the Colorado. Major Powell was further challenged by having one arm, having had his right arm amputated due to wounds suffered in the Civil War. That anyone survived is nothing short of miraculous. Cecil Kuhne has worked as a rafting guide on many western rivers, including the Colorado, and his background brings a sense of authenticity to his book. Accounts of this daring voyage through the river’s awe-inspiring canyons and gorges have varied over the years. “River Master” is an excellent attempt at setting the record straight.
