Comment before reading the book:
Okay, I've never read the book and I still thought this was a lame movie. I didn't understand a lot of the film's second half (having not read the book), and even though I thought the actors were good the garden scene was just cheesy. And why were there a few gay comments thrown in? The movie started out interesting but it got progressively worse until the point when I was just waiting for it to end already. The second half was SOOOOOOO boring.

Comment after reading the book:
Huh. Well, it makes more sense, but they did change a few things. One bonus were the actors—those who played Clary, Jace, Simon, and Luke were excellent choices. But those who played Isabelle, Alec, and Valentine were so, so wrong. The ending was totally messed up, and they added/omitted some details from the book. The garden scene was STILL cheesy and the second half was STILL boring. A piece of advice: read the book, don't watch the movie, and leave it at that. Don't read the rest of the series. Don't waste your time on anything else other than the book.

The plot was a bit convoluted and overwritten for such a simplistic movie but, overall, enjoyable to watch.

I am sad to say that the film makers of this movie completely ruined what was once an amazing book. This movie is so different from the book in multiple ways, that I couldn’t let my eyes be burned by watching it. The movie does not give the book any justice! I believe that I can speak for all when I say that the movie was a massive disappointment! First I would like to comment on the casting. Lily Collins, who plays Clary Fray, did not fully capture the role as I had expected her to. She lacked the physical characteristics that were described in the book. She was not as emotional as Clary was in the book and did not capture the character that is Clary Fray. I believe that this movie could have been done better and focused more along the lines of what was written in the book. Although, I do have to say that I was elated to hear that a TV show was coming out based on the book series: Shawdowhunters. This TV show is exactly along the lines of the book and the casting is fantastic! The TV show I would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat, but I cannot say the same about the movie! - @BakerBooks of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

mortal instruments, city of bones, is a amazing book written by Cassandra Clare. The main character of this series is called Clary and the problem is that she doesn't know who she really is and suddenly she figures out who she is and what her mother and her father were.

It was good....though I wish Alec and Magnus would have been a bigger part of it....:(

Jace was sarcastic and casted right. Alec and Magnus Bane were sooooo wrong. Luke and Simon were perfect. Alaric was good but not awesome. They definitely changed the simon-idiot-turned-rat-thing. Overall it was a better movie rendition-of-book then the Percy Jackson movies (don't even get me started on that) book was better though.

This movie had some good elements but it's not the greatest movie out there. It felt like a mixture of a lot of other teen flix. The power tattoos were pretty cool and the different concepts of the spiritual world being amongst the human world was interesting too.
