Outstanding "military fantasy" from an author that should probably be better known. Cook brings the tone and grit of military sci-fi into the fantasy genre, and focuses the reader's attention on the experiences of a "band of brothers" embroiled in a sorcerous war of epic scale.

This book is very interesting, odd, sparsely written and incredibly absorbing. It's all about events and characters, not about endless world building, which I find refreshing. Give it a try!

I have never been much of a fantasy reader, but then Game of Thrones came out and I started to read more fantasy. But I never really found anything quite as compelling. Until I read the Black Company. Wow, I think the first trilogy that he writes, which is collected in Chronicles of the Black Company are the best fantasy I have ever read, ahead of Game of Thrones and Steven Erikson's Malazan series. The writing, the storytelling, the world building are all masterful in this series. And a highly likable main character. If you like fantasy treat yourself to this series.

I find this to be one of the rawest fantasy collections ever written. I decided to read it after noticing the quote by Steven Erikson on the back stating that it was like, "reading Vietnam War fiction on peyote." The books live up to that. I don't find The Books of the South or The Glittering Stone books (the second and third sets of Black Company stories) to be any less than excellent. The story remains raw, focused, and intense.
